Name: Alyson Bourque

What is your favorite part of your job?

Being the librarian and ELA teacher, I love helping the school as a whole, students, teachers, and staff, with any problem they may have.  Whether it be with Chromebooks, research, or proofreading something they have written, I enjoy working with them to help solve the issue.  I get to interact with everyone and not just “my classes.”

How many years have you been working at Kaplan High?

I have been teaching at KHS for 24 years.  I taught for 5 years in private school.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of school?

Outside of school, I love to relax!  I also love to spend time with family and friends, watch movies, exercise, and bake.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I believe teaching is in my DNA!  My father, who was a science educator and school board member, would bring me chalk from his classroom, and I turned my bedroom into a classroom! My sister was an ELA teacher and librarian here at KHS as well, so the education career was all around me. I do have to also give credit to all my teachers throughout the years because I had GREAT teachers; Mrs Eileen Guillory and Dr Cliff Roche are the ones who inspired me to major in secondary ELA education.

Did you graduate from Kaplan high school?

Yes, I did graduate from KHS, class of 1989.  Best years of my life!

What is your favorite TV show?

Any true crime shows are my favorite!

What Grade levels and subjects do you teach?

I teach virtual classes, so I mainly teach upperclassmen, however, I am always helping any student who needs any extra ELA help.

What are your favorite hobbies?

My favorite hobbies are puzzling, reading, and exercising.

What do you love about teaching at KHS?

I love our Pirate kids; there truly are no better students than the ones we have which is a reflection of our Pirate community! I love seeing these students grow and mature. My working family is pretty awesome too!

Are you involved in any extracurricular clubs or sports at KHS?

I have been the Homecoming Court sponsor (started as co-sponsor) for the past 24 years. I get to work with an amazing group of young women.
